Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence

Okumura Sociedade de Advogados uses artificial intelligence tools to support its legal work, always subject to professional secrecy, the ethics of the legal profession, and data protection. This page sets out the commitments we make to clients and partners regarding that use. The technical procedures and internal controls that give effect to these commitments are set out in a separate internal policy.
Client confidentiality comes before any efficiency gain
The confidentiality of the information entrusted to us is an absolute duty. No convenience or productivity gain justifies exposing it. Where AI is used, it is used within that limit, not in spite of it.
Client information is never entered into public AI tools
Client data and documents are not entered into free, personal, or publicly available AI services. Where the work calls for AI support, it takes place only in corporate tools contracted by the firm, under contractual guarantees of confidentiality and data protection, and always applying data minimization, meaning that only the information strictly necessary for the task is used.
All work undergoes human review
No content produced with AI support is delivered, filed, or sent without the critical review of a lawyer. AI does not replace legal judgment or the professional responsibility of the lawyer who signs the work.
Accuracy and verification of sources
Legislation, case law, and other references are confirmed against official sources before any use. We do not treat a citation as sound merely because a tool produced it.
Transparency
We inform clients, under the terms of their engagement, of the use of AI tools in the provision of services.
Data protection
The processing of personal data complies with Law No. 13.709/2018 (the Brazilian General Data Protection Law, LGPD), on an adequate legal basis and with technical and contractual guarantees from the tool providers, including as to international data transfers.
Governance and accountability
The firm's use of AI is governed by an internal policy, reviewed periodically and whenever there is a relevant change in the law or in the tools. Oversight rests with the firm's management, together with the person responsible for data protection.
Responsibility for the work delivered lies, in all cases, with the firm's lawyers. AI is a supporting instrument, not the author of the legal service.
